Focus on Canadian Opera Creation
On March 9 and 10, 2011, Tapestry New Opera presents the first public workshops of Act I of their new opera The Enslavement and Liberation of Oksana G. (composer Aaron Gervais and librettist Colleen Murphy). Oksana G. is a multilingual work centred on a dangerous ménage à trois in the world of sex trafficking. Tom Diamond directs a cast of sixteen and Tapestry Managing Artistic Director Wayne Strongman conducts. See Tapestry’s website for more information and tickets.

The Enslavement and Liberation of Oksana G. received a development award from the Canadian Opera Creation Fund and was also a part of the Creative Connections program.

OPERA America 2011 Opera Conference May 7-11

Congratulations to Chants Libres for winning 2 Prix Opus for its opera L'eau qui danse, la pomme qui chante et l'oiseau qui dit la vérité (Tremblay/Morency). The opera picked up the awards in the categories of Musical event of the year and Best new work of the year.

Opera Atelier has announced its 2011/12 season which includes a co-production of Lully’s Armide with The Glimmerglass Festival. See the release for more info.

Vancouver Opera has also announced its 2011/12 season which includes Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story in its first staging by an opera company in Canada. See the release for the details. Vancouver Opera has also announced the extension of the contract of its Music Director, Jonathan Darlington. See here for more.

The Banff Centre for the Arts has issued a call for applications for its 2011-2012 Fall and Winter Music Creative Residencies. The programs are self-directed in nature, and provide emerging and established artists with a period of focused time to concentrate on personal artistic development and work towards a specific project.
