Annual Meeting of Members
This issue of High Notes is a short one, as we are about to set off to Calgary for the Annual Meeting of Members (hosted by Calgary Opera) January 28-29, 2011. While there, we will begin our strategic planning consultations with members, celebrate this year’s honouree of the National Opera Directors Recognition Award, and take in a world premiere opera, The Inventor (Tovey/Murrell). Registrants have already been sent an updated agenda. If you have any questions, please contact us. We look forwarding to seeing you in Calgary!

Focus on Canadian Opera Creation
This January 29th, Calgary Opera presents the world premiere of The Inventor (Tovey/Murrell). Delegates of the Opera.ca Annual Meeting of Members will have the pleasure of attending the opening night.

The Inventor follows the true story of a young Sandy Keith Jr. (nephew to the famous Alexander Keith) as he attempts to make his way in the world, and surpass his uncle, and turns to criminal endeavours. Keith was able to con tens of thousands of dollars from his victims.

An all-Canadian cast includes Baritone James Westman, Soprano Laura Whalen, Soprano Erin Wall, Tenor Roger Honeywell, Mezzo-Soprano Judith Forst and Bass Phillip Ens.

The Inventor received both a Development and Production Award from the Canadian Opera Creation Fund.

The Canadian Opera Company has announced its 11/12 season which includes two Canadian premieres: Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's Love from Afar and A Florentine Tragedy by Alexander Zemlinsky.

Opera Hamilton will present its 2011/12 season in a new home.

Of Note
The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) in December 2010 released its much anticipated Cultural HR Study. It is the largest HR study ever undertaken on the cultural sector in Canada. It includes both a Labour Market Information (LMI) report with the most complete set of tables and detailed statistics ever assembled on the cultural labour force; and an in-depth report on HR Trends and Issues faced by employers, employees and the self-employed. The Interactive Forum for the study of the Impact of Emerging Digital Technology on the Cultural Sector is now open. Have your say by joining the conversation here.
