Upcoming Performances
On December 8, Opéra de Québec will hold their annual Fundraising Gala at the Grand Théâtre de Québec, and it promises to be an exciting night! Soloists from Québec and across Canada will be featured, and the evening will also include performances by the Choeur de l’Opéra de Québec and l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec. As part of their New Voices series, Queen of Puddings Music Theatre will present Canadian soprano Betty Allison on December 7th at the Tank House Theatre. She’ll be singing Sofia Gubaidulina’s Galgenlieder à 3 (Gallows Songs) – a dramatic and satirical 15-song cycle featuring the whimsical text of German poet Christian Morgenstern. Betty can currently be seen in the title role of Pacific Opera Victoria’s Mary’s Wedding, and more information about her Queen of Puddings appearance can be found here.


A Poulenc double-bill is set to open December 1st at the University of Toronto: the opera program at U of T’s Faculty of Music will present two of Poulenc’s one-act works, La Voix Humaine and Les Mamelles de Tirésias, back-to-back. Performances run from December 1st through 4th at MacMillan Theatre, and more information can be found here.

Canadian Opera Company Reports Modest Surplus for 2010/2011 Season
At the Canadian Opera Company’s Annual General Meeting on November 9th, COC Board President Philip C. Deck announced the COC achieved another successful performance year in 2010/2011, recording a modest surplus of $10,000. In its fifth season at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the COC generated ticket revenue of $12.3 million and recorded an average attendance of 94%.

Finalists From Across Canada come to Toronto for Inaugural COC Ensemble Studio Competition
Following auditions in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and New York City attended by Canadian Opera Company administrators, 10 out of a pool of over 160 young, aspiring opera singers have been selected to compete in the final auditions at the inaugural COC Ensemble Studio Competition. For the first time in the history of the COC, the final auditions for singers seeking to join the Ensemble Studio training program will be made public as a vocal competition. Lindsay Barrett (Sudbury, ON), Claire de Sevigne (Montreal, QC), Sasha Djihanian (Montreal, QC), Rachel Fenlon (Victoria, BC), Aviva Fortunata Wilks (Calgary, AB), David Gibbons (Red Deer, AB), Danielle MacMillan (Toronto, ON), Owen McCausland (Saint John, NB), Laura McLean (New Glasgow, NS), and Cameron McPhail (Brandon, MB) are the finalists who will be competing for an offer of a coveted position in the 2012/2013 Ensemble Studio as well as one of four cash prizes.

On October 31st, the Ontario Arts Foundation announced that Opera.ca member Dean Burry has won the 2011 Louis Applebaum Composers Award. This year’s $10,000 award recognizes excellence in a body of work by an artist in the field of music composition for young people, and was presented to Mr. Burry at a dress rehearsal his opera, Isis and the Seven Scorpions, which is currently touring Southern Ontario with the Canadian Opera Company.

The Ontario Arts Council has announced the appointment of Peter Caldwell as Director and CEO of the OAC. Current OAC Executive Director John Brotman will be retiring in January 2012.

The campaign will run until the end of November, and donated miles will directly support Opera.ca’s Travel Support Program. Your donated Aeroplan miles will allow us to bring field experts and keynote speakers to Opera.ca meetings and conferences, and fund travel to sector meetings that serve the organization.
