Opera.ca Welcomes New Minister of Canadian Heritage Pablo Rodriguez

Opera.ca is pleased to welcome the Hon. Pablo Rodriguez as our new Minister of Canadian Heritage. Previously serving as the government’s chief whip, Montreal MP Pablo Rodriguez takes over the Heritage portfolio after a shuffle of ministers by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on July 18. We look forward to working with Pablo Rodriguez to strengthen the Canadian arts scene. Opera.ca thanks the Hon. Mélanie Joly for her leadership as Minister of Heritage and wish her the best in her appointment as Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and la Francophonie. Her consultative style and her leadership in investing in the Canadian arts sector have been deeply appreciated.

Opera.ca’s 2019 Budget Recommendations

After consultations with members this summer, Opera.ca has announced its two recommendations made to the Standing Committee on Finance as part of its pre-budget consultations. Opera.ca’s first recommendation is that the Government of Canada fulfill the commitment made in Budget 2016 to increase the budget of the Canada Council for the Arts by $180 million by 2021, by following through with the remaining new investments of $110 million in 2018-19, $145 million in 2019-20, and $180 million in 2020-21. The second recommendation is to increase Canadian Heritage’s Endowment Incentives component of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund (CCIF) by $6.5 million to bring it up to $25.5 million.
