September 22-23, 2018 (Both days begin at 9 a.m, with an informal meet-and-greet on the evening of Friday September 21st.)

(Simone McIntosh, Samuel Chan, Megan Quick, and Samantha Pickett in a scene from Purcell’s Dido (COC Ensemble Studio, 2018). The goal of the Summit is to launch a holistic conversation on opera artist training, career path planning, and discovering new opportunities for working together nationally.

The Summit will be an in-depth exploration of the increasingly diverse career paths for today’s emerging artists, opportunities for greater gender equity among opera creators and administrators, and more direct connection/communication between training programs, universities and the professional producing sector.

Operas and Special Performances Featured During the Summit

As part of the Summit, we are proud to feature Montréal-based ensemble Musique 3 Femmes in a workshop performance of new operas by female composers and librettists selected for the new Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes. The Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes is a new $25,000 award in Canada for emerging women composers and librettists. Its aim is to foster emerging talent in operatic creation and to develop new works by all-female creative teams from across Canada through workshops and performances of their works.

Opéra de Montréal presents Rigoletto at Place des Arts on Saturday, September 22, 2018. (Separate purchase required; special rates apply to Summit delegates. More information to follow.)

The final day of the Summit will feature a Symposium on Workshopping a Workshop which explores a variety of ways to connect source materials to the librettist, composer, and performers by activating actors, singers, historians, musicologists, and singers in a multi-disciplined exploration. Excerpts from the new James Garner opera, Much Ado!, will be presented by Opera McGill students alongside the Shakespeare source materials presented by Montreal-based actors with additional insights given by invited historians, Shakespearians, and women's studies experts.
