Calgary Opera Presents the Canadian Premiere of Silent Night

Calgary Opera opens the 2014-15 main stage season on November 8 with the Canadian premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning opera Silent Night by Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell. Calgary Opera joins many other groups in commemorating the centenary of the start of WWI with this opera that was inspired by true events. It tells the story of a spontaneous truce on Christmas Eve 1914 when combatant troops laid down their weapons to celebrate the holiday together and bury their dead. Tapestry Briefs' Booster Shots: An Opera Crawl in the Distillery

Tapestry presents TAPESTRY BRIEFS: BOOSTER SHOTS, ten original, provocative opera shorts brought to life in site-specific installations in-and-around the Distillery Historic District, for four performances only, November 13-16, 2014. Launching Tapestry’s 35th anniversary season, TAPESTRY BRIEFS: BOOSTER SHOTS is HBO-style opera ripped from the headlines of contemporary life. Each night begins in the Ernest Balmer Studio, Tapestry’s studio and bar in the Distillery Historic District. The crawl continues with subsequent scenes animating other Distillery spaces–from freight elevators and brick lined halls, to intimate corners and public galleries. Select locations will be paired with “booster shots" of flavour stimulants, ranging from craft beer and sake to artisanal ice cream, for this “new tastes” opera crawl. For more information, click here.

Against the Grain Theatre presents #UncleJohn, inspired by Mozart’s Don Giovanni

A modern interpretation of Don Giovanni with a new English libretto by AtG artistic director Joel Ivany, #UncleJohn will be presented from December 11-19 in The Black Box Theatre at 1087 Queen St. West’s famed vintage rock venue, The Great Hall. The creative team behind AtG’s 2013 Dora Award-winning Figaro’s Wedding is reunited, with lighting design by Jason Hand and set and costume design by Patrick Du Wors. Registration now open for 16-24 year olds: Youth Opera Lab

Against the Grain Theatre and COC are partnering to deliver the next Youth Opera Lab, an interactive workshop on directing and producing. The Lab will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 5 – 9:30pm with AtG founder and artistic director Joel Ivany. Celebrated Canadian Tenor Ben Heppner To Host Second Annual Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition Gala

On November 25, 2014, the Canadian Opera Company presents its annual Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition Gala at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Hosting the highly anticipated vocal competition is Canadian Ben Heppner. Heppner helms an evening dedicated to discovering and celebrating the best of Canada’s up-and-coming opera stars, with the awarding of cash prizes ranging in value from $1,500 to $5,000. On November 29, the Banff Centre presents Measha Brueggergosman at the Eric Harvie Theatre. Noted by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a singer of rare gifts and artistic intensity” and by the Miami Herald for possessing “a superb voice capable of just about everything,” Brueggergosman has emerged as one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities of the day.
