Black Lives Matter.

 
Opera.ca, is the voice of opera in Canada, and in response to the disturbing violence against Black people in the US, Canada and the world, we raise our voice to speak out against anti-Black racism and systemic racism everywhere.
Black Lives Matter.
We acknowledge that this is not just a US problem, and that racism is prevalent in Canada and around the world, and that we must act diligently to eradicate it.
We encourage others, individually and collectively, to also speak out in solidarity and support of our Black communities, and for other who have too long suffered race-based abuse, subjugation, oppression, violence and silence from those who could make a difference.
 
Some actions Opera.ca has taken and will continue to take in the future in support of anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion:
 
Opera.ca’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Actions to date
  • Staff participated in Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) Organizational Change program for Arts Service Organizations.
  • We developed and delivered a Governance session on Equity, Diversity and Inclusive practices for opera company board members.
  • We did an extensive revision and re-articulation of our workplace anti-harasssment policies last September.
  • We engaged in an Indigenous-led process to articulate a guidance in using opera to contribute to the Truth and Reconciliation process as part of the Opera Civic Impact Framework
  • We programmed the Blanket Exercise at the NL Colloquium for all members as experiential learning and truth-telling in Indigenous cultural history.
  • Staff made personal commitments to change by taking Indigenous Cultural Competency Training Course
Re-commitments/Actions
  • Adopting a statement of values on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion which will be approved at an upcoming board meeting
  • Regular and ongoing personal reflection and development in anti-bias, bystander intervention training for all members.
  • Creating an Indigenous-led guidance on our website for all members that include all Land Acknowledgements, why we do them, and resources for further education.
  • Commit to prioritizing anti-racism actions as an on-going process towards equity, inclusion in the opera sector for all Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour.
