On April 29, the Opera.ca Advocacy Committee (Christina Loewen, Patrick Corrigan, Pierre Dufour, Cheryl Hickman, and Chris Lorway) travelled to Ottawa to meet with the Canada Council for the Arts and Canadian Heritage. Following our strategic plan, the objective of the meetings were to re-establish advocacy relationships between the sector, funders and elected officials, and promote greater understanding of the opera sector, its successes and challenges. The meetings were a positive first step in communicating the important role opera companies play in their communities for Canadians, and the potential for deepening opera’s impact and accessibility in cities across the country.

Opera.ca Executive Director Christina Loewen was on hand May 3, to present the National Opera Director Recognition Award sponsored by BMO Financial to Mr. Michael O’Brian of Vancouver Opera. The presentation was made during the Prelude Dinner preceeding the opening night of Vancouver Opera’s Don Carlo.

Opera.ca has chosen two Canadians to participate in the OPERA America Leadership Intensive program. Joe Peacock, Director of Corporate Giving at Vancouver Opera, and Joanna Verano, Development Manager of Pacific Opera Victoria will join 10 US participants in San Francisco during Opera Conference 2014, as well as a week-long intensive in New York City in August.
