AOC DIGITAL SHOWCASE: GWENDOLYN YEARWOOD – SHE/HER

Welcome to my artist profile!

My name is Gwen Yearwood and I live and create in my hometown of Calgary Alberta. Calgary is located on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

I am a teacher, a soprano, and the co-founder of Good Mess Opera Theatre alongside my best friend and business partner Sawyer Craig. Together we created Good Mess to give opera artists a platform to produce their passion projects in an environment that is focused on process over product.

My work in each aspect of my portfolio is firmly rooted in the belief that the community of opera artists in Canada is not reflected in the industry we have inherited and that we need to work towards making it so. Our community is diverse and welcoming but it often seems the industry is anything but. We each have a responsibility to the generation of opera artists coming up behind us to leave the industry better than we found it.

The Sex Lives of Vegetables – Good Mess Opera Theatre

A note about The Sex Lives of Vegetables

This video was created for Good Mess Opera Theatre’s inaugural performance in August 2021. With the direction of Sawyer Craig and a piano track performed and recorded by Natasha Fransblow, an all-female team of creators from across Canada was able to bring Danika Loren’s The Sex Lives of Vegetables to life. This recital was filmed in my home entirely by me… except when I recruited my husband to throw lettuce at me. Enjoy!
