JAYNE HAMMOND

Jayne Hammond is a soprano, fundraiser, grant-writer, arts administrator, volunteer, and active member of Canada’s opera industry living, working, and creating on Treaty One territory (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

Praised for her “clear soprano voice” (Winnipeg Free Press), she has appeared as a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Opera Victoria, the Victoria Symphony, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Winnipeg, the Pacific Baroque Festival, Opera NUOVA, the Victoria Baroque Players, Manitoba Underground Opera, and Living Room Live.

Favourite operatic credits include Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Clorinda (La Cenerentola), Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro), Elsie Maynard (The Yeomen of the Guard), and Casilda (The Gondoliers). Her love of concert repertoire has resulted in performances of Handel’s Silete venti (Pacific Baroque Festival), Bach and Buxtehude’s Wachet auf! (Victoria Baroque Players), Stravinsky’s Les Noces (U of M Singers), Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate (UM Symphony Orchestra), and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2: Lobegesang (Wind Chamber Concert Series).

A passionate advocate of new music, Ms. Hammond was a finalist in the 2020 Eckhardt-Gramatté competition with duo partner Lisa Rumpel. She has premiered works by Canadian composers David Foley, Gordon Fitzell, Kristen Wachniak, Rebekah Cummings, and Harley Dyck. In summer 2021, she earned praise for her “mesmerizing” interpretation of the final aria (Opera Canada) as Milica in Ana Sokolović’s Svadba for Manitoba Underground Opera.

Ms. Hammond is a valued member of the performing arts community on- and off-stage. She worked for two-and-a-half years as the Grants & Corporate Giving Manager for Manitoba Opera, overseeing a portfolio of corporate donors, sponsors, foundations, and public funders that represented 42% of the operating budget in the 2021 fiscal year. There, Ms. Hammond was instrumental in developing Manitoba Opera’s Digital Emerging Artists Program and contributed to the case for support for a $10M endowment campaign.

As a Senior Development Officer at RRC Polytech, Ms. Hammond is helping the organization achieve a historic $60M fundraising goal with a focus on major gifts. She also supports Canzona, Winnipeg’s Baroque Choir, as a freelance fundraising consultant and is a former teacher at the Manitoba Conservatory for Music and Arts. Ms. Hammond volunteers her time as a Manitoba Mentor with Opera InReach, Vice-President of the Board of Directors for Flipside Opera & Art Song Collective, and Mentorship Chair for the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Manitoba Chapter.

Ms. Hammond is a proud graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University (BMus Hon., Opera Diploma) and the University of Manitoba (MMus). She is currently studying at Simon Fraser University with the goal of earning a Non-Profit Management Certificate in the fall of 2024 and intends to achieve her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) professional designation in the summer of 2023.
