Statement: Association for Opera in Canada and Orchestras Canada on O₂ Conference in Edmonton, February 2026

The O₂ Conference and Indians on Vacation

We are writing in response to the now-public news surrounding the cancellation of Indians on Vacation, following confirmation that Thomas King, author of the novel on which the work is based, is not Indigenous. We acknowledge the impact of these developments on the people of Treaty 6 territory, as well as on the creative and performing artists and the partner companies involved. While the production’s premiere was one of several touchpoints considered in selecting the date and location of the O₂ Conference (Edmonton, 3-5 February 2026), we want to reassure our community that the conference is proceeding with thoughtful adjustments.

The response to our Call for Proposals has been extraordinary, with a remarkable breadth and depth of submissions from across both sectors. This overwhelmingly positive engagement affirms not only the value of gathering, but also the necessity of coming together at a moment when our sectors are navigating complex questions of representation, accountability, care, and community.

We remain committed to hosting a joint conference that is meaningful, responsible, and grounded in shared values, learning, and solidarity.

If you’d like to discuss this, please reach out to either Christina (AOC) or Katherine (OC). We look forward to talking with you.

With appreciation,

Association for Opera in Canada and Orchestras Canada
